Golden Eagle Monitoring
Golden eagle portrait
Project description:
As part of a long-term monitoring project of the Berchtesgaden National Park Administration, the population dynamics of the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) are documented in the Chiemgau, Berchtesgaden and immediately adjacent Salzburg Alps. A total of 15 territorial pairs are monitored over an area of about 1,500 km². Two further territories are currently not occupied. In the national park itself there are currently 5 golden eagle territories on an area of 210 km².
The goal of the project is on the one hand the preservation of a vital golden eagle subpopulation as well as the implementation of concrete measures for the protection of this rare bird of prey in Bavaria.
Golden Eagle Nest
Focal points of the project
- Timely location of currently occupied golden eagle nests
- Monitoring the success of agreements with helicopter associations and hang-glider and paraglider pilots to minimize disturbances in sensitive areas (= horst environment)
- Documentation of breeding progress and breeding success
- Determination of partner changes on the basis of an individual file of the eagles
- Documentation of spatial changes regarding the distribution of precincts
- Analysis of prey remains and feather material to identify relationships within the Bavarian golden eagle subpopulation.
- Implementation of targeted environmental education measures (e.g. guided tours) as well as intensive public relations work (press releases, lectures, etc.)
- Analysis of the results with the help of a geographic information system
