Cooperations climate and abiotic environment

Observation and research of the inanimate environment (i.e. climate, water, geology) takes a central role in national park research, as these abiotic factors form an important basis for all life in the national park. Research and monitoring on climate and abiotic environment are carried out in close cooperation with long-term cooperation partners.

The national park's dense climate observation network is operated in close cooperation with the German Meteorological Service and the Bavarian Avalanche Warning Service. Specifically, in addition to the mutual exchange of data and information, cooperation is also established with these partner institutions for the construction and maintenance of climate stations in the national park. This cooperation is of mutual benefit, as the data obtained in the National Park thus contribute to better weather and hazard forecasting in the mountains, and at the same time the data situation in the National Park is significantly improved. In addition, the national park also cooperates in the climate context with the Bavarian State Institute of Forestry, which operates a forest climate station in the national park together with the national park administration. The hydrological monitoring of the national park is carried out in close cooperation with the Bavarian Forest National Park as well as the Limestone Alps National Park (Austria). Furthermore, there are long-term cooperations with the University of Augsburg (Prof. Kunstmann) and the University of Innsbruck (Prof. Strasser) as well as with the Limnological Station Iffeldorf of the Technical University of Munich on the topic of climate, snow and water. Research and monitoring on climate and abiotic environment contribute to the Virtual Alpine Observatory.
