»Berchtesgadener Land biosphere region«

the only alpine UNESCO biosphere reserve in Germany

The Berchtesgadener Land biosphere region was internationally recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1990. It is therefore part of a global system of areas that exemplarily depicts all types of landscape in the world, here a section of a natural and cultural landscape in the Alps.

The Berchtesgadener Land biosphere region is located in the southeast of Upper Bavaria and borders on Austria. It is 840 km2 in size and, like all biosphere reserves, is divided into a core zone, a buffer or buffer zone and a development zone. The core zone lies entirely within the Berchtesgaden National Park, which includes in particular the high mountain regions in the south of the area. The buffer zone consists of the buffer zone of the national park and two nature reserves.

Eight cities, markets and communities have a share in the biosphere region in its original extent. In addition to the eponymous Berchtesgaden, there are Ramsau b. Berchtesgaden, Bischofswiesen, Schönau am Koenigssee, Marktschellenberg, Bayerisch Gmain, Schneizlreuth and the town of Bad Reichenhall. In June 2010, the biosphere region was extended to the north and includes the entire district of Berchtesgadener Land. The municipalities of Laufen, Saaldorf-Surheim, Teisendorf, Freilassing, Ainring, Anger and Piding have also been added.
The expansion of the area takes into account the diverse ecological and economic interactions between the Alps and their foothills.
